Waterbury Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program Gets
Enthusiastic Reviews
Two-year-old Program Recommended for
Accreditation
WATERBURY – Waterbury
Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program, which began in
2008 as a way for hospital pharmacists to further their
expertise in the field, has been evaluated by a team of
inspectors with a national accreditation agency who came
away highly impressed with the program’s level of
excellence.
The inspectors with the American
Society of System Pharmacists told the hospital they
would push to have the hospital’s Year One Pharmacy
Residency Program fully accredited. The agency’s
Commission on Credentialing will make the determination
when it meets next month.
“We are very excited and pleased,”
said Bahar Matusik, the hospital’s Clinical Pharmacy
Coordinator and Program Director for the Year One
Pharmacy Residency Program. Matusik worked closely with
the team of inspectors when they evaluated the residency
program last year.
The pharmacy residency program,
which lasts for one year, now includes two full-time
residents. The program is open to licensed pharmacists
who wish to further their professional development and
add to their credentials.
Accreditation would serve to
enhance the program’s reputation, Matusik said. By
submitting the program to outside peer review, it shows
the hospital’s commitment to excellence in residency
training. It also provides for resources such as
information on critical issues in residency training, a
match program for selecting residency candidates and
opportunities for networking with other residency
preceptors, Matusik said.
