HOSPITAL CARDIAC SERVICES RANKED IN TOP TEN PERCENT IN
NATION
WATERBURY
– In a survey of
hospitals across the nation, Waterbury Hospital’s
Cardiac Services was recently ranked by HealthGrades in
the top ten percent in the nation for coronary
intervention. Additionally, the hospital was given the
2010 Coronary Intervention Excellence Award.
HealthGrades is an independent health care ranking
service.
The
rankings and the award came as gratifying news for
members of Waterbury Hospital’s cardiac care program,
which has been in place for five years.
“We
are extremely pleased that our program is now recognized
as one of the best in the country,” said Joanne Borduas,
the hospital’s Director of Outpatient Services. “The key
for us is that we have an outstanding team of people who
all understand their role and are committed to
delivering the highest quality care possible to our
patients.”
Borduas said the program relies on the teamwork and
professionalism of staff members in the hospital’s
Emergency Department (ED), Cardiovascular Unit and
Catheterization Lab. Once a patient comes through the
Emergency Department door showing signs of cardiac
arrest, she said, the team works quickly to make sure
the patient is stabilized and prepped for an
interventional procedure such as an angioplasty.
Last year, Cardiac Services average time for getting a
patient from the ED to the operating table was 60
minutes – a full 30 minutes less than the national
average, Borduas said.
“We’ve had cases where we’ve had patients prepped and
ready in 20 minutes,” she said. “When it comes to heart
attacks, you want to save as much time as possible to
minimize damage to the heart. Waterbury Hospital was
also given a five-star ranking by HealthGrades for
Coronary Interventional Procedures and a five-star
ranking for treatment of heart failure two years in a
row.
